Fear or Joy in the Lord

Items needed:
Flashlight
A microphone/ speaker (optional)

Studying: Helaman 5: 20-44

Discuss: Lehi and Nephi are the sons of Helaman (different from the ones at the beginning of the Book of  Mormon). They are sad because of the wickedness of the people and decide to go out and preach the gospel.

Ask: Where did Lehi and Nephi end up?

Read: Helaman 5:20-22

Answer: They were in prison with no food.

Ask: The people came to the prison to kill them. Why did they not kill them?

Read: verses 23-35

Answer: Lehi and Nephi were encircled about by fire, but were not burning up.

Use a flashlight or a lamp and shine it one two people who can represent Lehi and Nephi. Discuss why the people would be afraid.

Ask: What happened that caused the people to be more afraid?

Read: verses 26-28

Answer: There was an earthquake and it became dark.

Have someone shake the couch or chairs that the kids are sitting in. Turn off the lights in the room and the flashlight. Discuss how the people would feel now. Use a microphone or just read the following: "Repent ye, repent ye, and seek no more to destroy my servants whom I have sent unto you to declare good tidings."

Ask: How did the voice sound?

Read: verses 30-31

Answer: It was a not a loud voice, but one of mildness that pierced them to their souls.

Discuss: How would the voice be mild, but pierce them? Have you ever had a teacher or parent whisper through lots of noise? Somehow the whisper pierces through the noise.

Discuss: The earth shook three times and the darkness surrounded them so they couldn't run. There was one man in the crowd who used to belong to the church, but had left.

Ask: What did this man see?

Read: verse 36

Answer: He saw Lehi and Nephi's faces glowing in the darkness while they prayed.

Turn the flashlight back on to light your Lehi and Nephi.

Ask: What did the people begin to do?

Read: verse 42

Answer: They began to pray to Heavenly Father until the cloud of darkness left.
Turn the lights back on.

Ask: How did the people's feelings change? Remember they were surrounded by darkness and earthquakes.

Read: verse 43-44

Answer: Their fear turned to joy.

Discuss: The Lord sent both fear and joy to the people in the land of Nephi. How can he cause people to feel such different emotions? Why would the Lord want people to feel fear? How can you feel joy instead of fear in your life?
