Joy of Service

Lesson from Alma: The Joy of Service
Mosiah 18: 8-11

Begin by asking the kids how they would feel if you told them your family was going on a Disney Cruise (or buying a new Xbox or anything they would be super excited about). Hopefully if this is delivered well, you will have lots of happy, excited kids.

Read Mosiah 18:11:   And now when the people had heard these words, they clapped their hands for joy, and exclaimed: This is the desire of our hearts.

Ask: What do you think the people in the scripture are so excited about?

Read: verses 8-10

Discuss: Why do you think they were so excited to be baptized?
Review: end of verse 8 - 9 as ye are desirous to come into the  fold of God, and to be called his people, and are willing to bear one another’s burdens, that they may be light;
 Yea, and are willing to mourn with those that mourn; yea, and comfort those that stand in need of comfort, and to stand as witnesses of God at all times and in all things, and in all places that ye may be in, even until death, that ye may be redeemed of God, and be numbered with those of the first resurrection, that ye may have eternal life—
Discuss: What kinds of feelings do you have when you serve others? or when others serve you?

President Monson tells a story in his talk, "True Shepherds" in the October 2013 General Conference of a home teacher who visited a man for decades. He joined the church when he was in his nineties. When asked about his experience,  "He replied, '. . . it was worth every effort. As I witness the joy which has come to the members of the Hammer family, my heart fills with gratitude for the blessings the gospel has brought into their lives and for the privilege I have had to help in some way. I am a happy man.'"

Finish the lesson by discussing that the people of Alma have many physical trials after being baptized. How do you think their covenant to serve each other helps them through their trials?
